We want more software. But this reality has many implications. As business and consumer-level users, we are demanding more applications and data services every day. That means we need more developers and now. In the age of generative AI, we need more developers to use more gen AI tools to build more software and do it more quickly with fewer bugs and wider functionality. In a software universe where we are constantly searching for ways to replace (or at least evolve and refactor) outdated legacy applications, the classical rules of application economics no longer apply.
James Labocki, Red Hat senior director of product management, agrees with this proposition. He has lamented the fact that outdated applications become a bottleneck, hindering innovation and responsiveness to market demands. Because rebuilding or refactoring these applications can take hundreds, if not thousands of person-hours and can introduce additional complexity.
In an effort to address the new economics emerging here, Red Hat has introduced gen AI to Konveyor, the Red Hat-led open source community project aimed at helping organizations modernize applications to cloud-native technologies.
